Dictionaries often define rabble rouser negatively. For instance, an AI generated definition describes rabble-rousers as persons who stir up emotions prejudices, or passions. . . to incite unrest or rebellion. They are associated with "rabble", that is, "common people", mobs.
Well, rabble-rousers are often LEADERS. I first saw this term used in this way in Seth Godin's writings. And it makes sense. We need leaders, AKA rabble-rousers, to stem the tide, buck the flow. They are not afraid to challenge the status quo and are willing to go out on the limb to push for progress and innovation. We need people who are change tolerant and pursue improvements. We need leaders who can attract others to the cause.
If things do not feel "right", if boundaries need pushing, be brave enough to call it out, find solutions, engage like-minded colleagues. This is how innovation and improvements happen. This is how "holy cows" are debunked. It doesn't matter if the change is clinical, administrative, legislative...rabble rousers are often needed. If you are not comfortable as a rabble-rouser, at least get behind and provide constructive support.
Rabble-rousers are among my favorite forms of leadership depicted in the following image.
