The Excellence Formula: Persistence and Iterative Steps

Pursuit of excellence requires daily and consistent action, along with maintenance of the goal to strive to be better.

You’ll need an organized approach.  You probably already have a busy day, every day.  What can you take off your plate to focus on your goal?  You will need to come up with a “not to do list”.

Willingness to go from a mindset of going from  “good enough”, or on par with others, to “doing it better”, achieving higher level over time, is also critical. You’ll need to be willing to move out of your comfort level consistently.  This requires discipline because there is no “overnight sea change”. Excellence is pursued over time.  Remember Aristotle: “Excellence is never an accident.  It is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, and intelligent execution.”

Excellence also requires remembering that excelling does not mean you’re perfect, but that you are good at it and striving to grow.  It requires awareness that you’ll never be “perfect”.  Striving constantly requires discipline over comfort.

Find tools that help you in your journey.  One that has helped me immensely is content from James Clear. You can learn more at jamesclear.com  His book "Atomic Habits" is one I've mentioned before, but critical to the pursuit of excellence which requires "high intention, sincere effort, and intelligent execution"  This means HABIT.  His book focuses on "tiny habits, remarkable results" as you "build good habits and break bad ones". He also has an excellent TED Talk: Atomic Habits: How to Get 1% Better Every Day".  It is that 1% expectation of only small, iterative steps, that is so feasible.

Find a way to track your practice and results.  I just ordered a book entitled, "One Line a Day".  It is a small handbook, described as a "five-year memory book".  It is organized so that each page covers a different date of the year, starting with January 1.  Each page is also organized or formatted with space for a few lines for each of five years.  So I've started my first page and labeled it 2026, then will continue coming back to the same page over the next four years. After making entry on one page/date, you turn to the next page/date and do the same.  When you reach the end of the book, December 31, you go back to the beginning.  How smart is that?  I think it will prompt me to note what I'm doing, achieving, and/or thinking of each day.  I ordered through Amazon; if it sounds interesting, you can google the title and find examples at a number of vendors.  Of course, easily accessible options such as "diaries", calendars, or simply notebooks still work!   Whatever you use, excellence is an iterative and never-ending journey--having some way to document may keep you on track.

Remember: Persistence is key, with small, interactive steps and keeping your progress and outcomes visible!
