The National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners (NRCME) establishes requirements for the performance of physical examinations for truck and bus drivers by licensed healthcare professionals.   Only healthcare professionals who have completed the necessary training and passed NRCME's certification test are allowed to issue medical certificates to commercial motor vehicle drivers.

INPE's NRCME Training Course prepares healthcare providers with the knowledge needed to successfully complete the mandatory NRCME certification test.  The course online course is delivered through 6 course modules.  In addition to the lectures, printable handouts, additional videos, and lists of recommended NRCME and FMCSA resources are included.  Quizzes validate successful course completion and a sample test-bank of 180 itemsis also offered to help learners study and prepare for the NRCME test.

The INPE Online NRCME Training is 100% online, convenient, user-friendly, and affordable.  On completion, learners will be able to meet the following objectives:

    • Perform driver certification examinations in accordance with FMCSA physical qualification requirements and medical guidelines.
    • Apply knowledge of FMCSA's driver essential job functions, physical qualification standards and advisory criteria to findings gathered during the driver's medical examination.
    • Document with accuracy the medical history and physical examination findings on the Medical Examination Report and the Driver's Medical Certification Card certifying a driver for an appropriate interval.
    • Describe the physical and mental qualification requirements for commercial drivers using the 13 standards and Medical Expert Panel Guidance materials to determine driver medical fitness for duty.
    • Discuss the process for the FMCSA Waiver, Exemption, and the Skill Performance Evaluation (SPE) Certification Programs for commercial drivers who cannot otherwise qualify to drive.
    • Promote health and wellness strategies to reduce potential risk to public safety for the CMV driver.

To qualify as a NRCME medical examiner:

      1. Register for the INPE NRCME Training Course on INPE's CE Center.
      2. Complete the Training Course, receiving the required certificate of completion immediately after passing the final quiz.
      3. Register on NRCME's National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners site and obtain a registry number.
      4. Locate and register with your preferred testing center, scheduling to take the test.
      5. Continue studying to ensure successful test completion.
      6. Successfully pass the exam.

The first course module will explain the steps listed above, guiding you through the NRCME registration process and demonstrating how to locate your nearest testing location.

Accreditation:  This program is designated for 6.6 contact hours of NP CE credit by the Institute for Nurse Practitioner Excellence, an AANP Approved Provider.  The course is designed to prepare learners to serve as certified medical examiners under the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administrations' (FMCSA) NRCME program. The course presents the NRCME mandated core curriculum, using examples to illustrate recommendations and driver presentations.  This program is valid through  3/31/2018. This program was planned in accordance with AANP CE Standards and Policies and AANP Commercial Support Standards.
